Parenting Classes
Parenting is never easy, but we’re here to help! Come and join our parenting class! Offered several times throughout each year, the Child & Family Support Center’s Parenting Class provides an opportunity for parents to get re-energized, learn that they are not alone, improve their problem-solving skills and learn positive ways to discipline their children. Discipline means to teach, and our goal is to help you become the best teacher your children will ever have!
Our parenting class is an eight-week course with eight topics of discussion, including Healthy Families, Self-Esteem, Communication, Anger and Stress Management, Discipline I, II & III and Sexuality. Lessons are presented using a variety of mediums, including videos, activities, handouts and group discussion. Each class runs for 1 ½ hours, and Nursery care is available for children ages 11 and under at no charge. The course fee is just $25.00 per individual or $30.00 per couple. Participants receive a binder with all the handouts given throughout the class that serves as a parenting manual for years to come. Who says children don’t come with instructions? If you would like to join other parents to learn new parenting skills in a fun and nurturing environment, call the Child & Family Support Center at (435) 752-8880 for course schedules and registration information.
Quotes from past participants:
- “I learned than I can ignore some behaviors or I can better deflect inappropriate behaviors. I can diffuse behaviors and offer choices.”
- This class has given me new perspectives on parenting – much more than the limits of just what my own parents taught me through their examples (not that it was bad, just limited).”
- “The homework helped me start certain ways of parenting that I may not have had the inclination to do myself.”
- “This is a positive class that should be mandatory to ALL parents! It was very comfortable because of the great staff! I have learned so much information and now want to continue learning about parenting.”
Parenting Classes at the Cache County Jail
The Child & Family Support Center provides an eight-week parenting course at the Cache County Jail, offered on a continuous basis throughout each year. Classes are taught to groups of male inmates and female inmates by invitation of the jail’s programming coordinator. Topics of discussion include Healthy Families, Self-Esteem, Communication, Anger and Stress Management, Discipline I, II & III and Reunification. Participants who attend seven of the eight classes receive a certificate of completion and are invited to register for the Center’s in-house classes upon their release from incarceration.
Quotes from past participants:
- “This class helped me learn some of the life skills that I was missing. Lack of these skills led me to incarceration in the first place, and now that I’ve learned them, I think I’ll do much better once I’m back on the outside.”
- “I’ve learned to be more responsible as a parent, thinking of my children first instead of thinking only of myself.”
- “In every way, from toddlers to teens, my entire perspective on raising children has been changed from old school to proper respect.”
- “I’ve learned so much from this class. I took it twice.”
Stepfamily Classes (A comprehensive program for both parents and children)
If you need help with relationship concerns, two-home parenting, disciplining non-biological children, improving stepsibling interactions, financial concerns or conflict management, the Child & Family Support Center’s stepfamily parenting class is the place to be! You’ll enjoy getting to know other Cache Valley families who share the unique opportunities and challenges of stepfamilies, and you’ll also receive valuable information to help nurture and strengthen your home environment.
This is a "don't miss" opportunity for stepfamilies, future stepfamilies and cohabitating couples with children. Classes are provided in partnership with Utah State University and are held for six weeks, with each class lasting two hours. The course utilizes an evidence-based SmartSteps curriculum and is designed to have parents and their children meet in separate classes for the first 1 ½ hours and then gather together for the final 30 minutes to participate in combined activities. Children’s classes are divided into developmentally appropriate age groups, with children under age 6 receiving care in the Center’s Nursery.
Each week’s class includes refreshments and dinner for the whole family, and it's all provided free of charge to participants! If your stepfamily could use additional support, call the Center now to learn more about our stepfamily course and register for the next class series. Additional information is available at (435) 752-8880.
- “The class helped me see that there are many different ways to handle each situation, especially without anger. I have found that I’m slower to anger and I can handle certain situations more clear-headed.”
- “The class got my husband and me on the same page.”
- “I’ve been trying the skills and they have WORK! I feel like a better person and mother.”
